Ms. Shamcey Supsup : "Tsunami Catwalk"

Tsunamis may have been termed for devastating tidal waves but Shamcey’s “tsunami catwalk,” which was a term coined by her trainer, will always be remembered especially by beauty pageant enthusiasts. According to them, walking this way demonstrates skill and talent because she has to keep the shoulder steady as her hips sway.

Ms. Shamcey Supsup is the current Bb. Pilipinas-Universe titlist who represented the Philippines during the 2011 Ms. Universe pageant held in Sao Paolo, Brazil last September. She went on to win as the top fan favorite in an online poll for the question and answer portion, placed second best in the long gown or evening wear portion, and eventually bagged third runner-up overall by the end of the competition.

Born Shamcey Gurrea Supsup on May 16, 1986 to parents Timoteo and Marcelina in Iligan City, Shamcey grew up helping her father tend to their family’s farm and livestock while her mother worked overseas and/or out of town as an engineer. This exposed the young beauty-queen-to-be on the values of hard work and discipline, the very same values that she still carries with her today. The family eventually moved to General Santos City when she was about three years old.

Young Shamcey attended the Notre Dame of General Santos (previously known as Notre Dame of Lagao) in her primary level where she was the valedictorian of her class. She went to the Mindanao State University High School in the first year of secondary school and transferred to the Makati City High School when her mother got assigned in Filinvest Alabang. This time, she graduated as the class salutatorian. Shamcey was also reputed to be quite studious and a bibliophile at school.

In college, taking inspiration from her mother, Shamcey studied Architecture at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. Not only did she get a Bachelor’s degree but also graduated magna cum laude as well. And a year later at the June 2010 Architect Licensure Examination given by the Board of Architecture, she finished at the top spot out of the total 2,130 examinees who passed, no less than number one at that, with a good average of 86.60 points.

Supup was 24 years old when she joined the Bb. Pilipinas pageant on April 10, 2011 at the Araneta Coliseum held in Cubao, Quezon City. There were 40 contenders hailing from different parts of the country and from Filipino communities around the world. With her height of 5’7 ¼, comely proportions of 32 ½ - 23 ½ - 33 1/2 and sharp intellect, Shamcey proved her worth, winning the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe crown as well as Ms. Talent and Ms. Philippine Airlines respectively.

Filipinos love their beauty queens like sports heroes. Shamcey will be forever in our hearts as she placed the country on the limelight following Venus Raj making it to the top five for two straight years.
